In a roguelike such as Hades, it means playing as Zagreus, a god of rebirth. That Hades' narrative is so entwined with its combat is nothing new for the developers at Supergiant Games, who've established themselves as masters of putting your actions in sync with the stories they tell. What sets Hades apart isn't just that it's a great roguelike with the kind of repeatable depth that makes it engrossing to play for hours, but also how it uses its structure to tell an ongoing story about family, secrets, and resolution. I'd gotten so caught up in the story of my character, Zagreus, and the heroes, villains, and gods that had helped him get here that I was elated to have finally gotten him to the end of his journey. But while I was definitely a little too proud of putting together a set of abilities and perks that shredded the boss after they wrecked me just a few tries ago, that wasn't why I felt tears welling up. I'd been fighting to see this ending for hours (months, technically, if you count my time in early access), and in roguelikes, it feels better than usual to see an ending. Other highlights here include The Diofield Chronicle, a real-time tactics game in a similar vein to Nintendo's Fire Emblem series, and NEO: The World Ends With You, a stylish follow-up to one of the best Nintendo DS games of all time that all action-RPG fans should check out.The first time I beat the final boss in Hades, I felt an enormous sense of relief. It's worth considering at this low price. Since launch, the game has been fine-tuned with some substantial updates, received free expansion content, and at the very least it's a fun experience that doesn't take itself too seriously. A highlight reel of interactive Final Fantasy tunes, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is pure symphonic and nostalgic fun.Īnother interesting game here is Forspoken, a more action-packed adventure in which you take control of Frey as she journeys across a strange and dangerous land. The sheer volume of content available in it makes it the definitive entry in the Theatrhythm series. Meanwhile, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, a rhythm game, is a distinct change of pace from most other games on this list. Octopath Traveler II is markedly better than the original. Like its predecessor, the game looks like a retro treat given an HD-2D makeover, and with multiple characters to follow, this turn-based JRPG provides dozens of hours of action and storytelling.
